EDUCATION FIRST

Education First is a CTFund initiative that began in April 2013 when one of our board members asked the following question: What if the cure for cancer was in the mind of an adolescent girl living in the slums of Bangladesh? Wouldn't we want her to be able to afford an education? Thus, the Education First initiative was born. Education First is a program designed to build the next generation of leaders: girls. The goal of the initiative is to help girls living in developing areas of Bangladesh, India, and other parts of South Asia receive an adequate education throughout their childhood and teenage lives. Education First is specifically geared towards getting girls interested in the fields of science and technology but also works to provide educational facilities to boys and those interested in the humanities. CTFund believes that education is the first step towards ensuring that a child can live a healthy and prosperous life. According to the United Nations Foundation, girls who receive an education are less likely to marry early, have children early, and become victims of child abuse, labor, trafficking, and exploitation.

What exactly are we doing to help girls and boys receive an education geared towards the sciences? Our purpose is three-fold. First, we want to provide impoverished children with the proper equipment necessary to receive an education. Starting in June, we will be giving out baskets full of notebooks, pencils, pens, and textbooks to every child we can reach. We believe that these items will give children the tools they need to challenge themselves and reach their full potential. Second, we want to build a school in every village in the slums of Bangladesh that does not currently have one in place. Many children around the world want to receive an education but cannot simply because they don't have a school closeby. We believe that building a school with adequate facilities will encourage parents to send both their boys and their girls to school every day. Finally, we want to encourage girls who are already in school or are entering school in developing countries to explore the field of science, mathematics, technology, and engineering (STEM). We believe that today's youth are tomorrow's leaders, so we want to ensure that every youth has the opportunity to receive an education, challenge him or herself, and reach his or her full potential. We are building next generation's leaders, and it starts with education.
