SPONSOR A FAMILY

In Bangladesh and other countries in South Asia, rickshaws can provide the poor with stable daily incomes. For a family that cannot find work, a rickshaw can provide them with the income they need to send their children to school, provide medical treatment for their children, and keep their children properly nourished. In 2012, Children's Trust Fund launched a program to provide rickshaws to impoverished families with small children who live in rural areas in Bangladesh. These families often cannot find work because they live in such remote parts of the country. In order to obtain a rickshaw from Children's Trust Fund, the family must meet the following requirements: 1) have at least one child who is under the age of eighteen and currenty is not receiving proper education, medical treatment, and/or nourishment, 2) have one able-bodied family member who can operate the rickshaw every day, and 3) use the income from the rickshaw to nourish, educate, an provide medical treatment for their child ro children.

A rickshaw or rickshaw van only cost around $175, yet to a family that cannot put food on the table or send their children to school, one rickshaw can mean the world. Here is some information about three of the families that we have recently supported by donating a rickshaw or rickshaw van.

CTFund donated a rickshaw van to the Fakir family, pictured to the left with their new van. The family lives in Sirajgng, Bangladesh. Hiron Fakir and his wife Hasina have four children: Hasan (fourteen years old), Ibrahim (eleven years old), Ramjan (nine years old), and Momota (seven years old). The family does not have any property. Previously, Hiron worked for a local usiness, driving a rickshaw van and paying half of his income to the business every day. His wife, Hasina, works in a house and gets almost nothing but food. As a result, they could not send their children to school. Hasan and Ibrahim had to work in a local store to help provide for the family.

After getting this rickshaw van from CTFund, Hiron no longer has to work for the local business and can keep his entire income. All four children will now be able to go to school. We will update their status and keep everyone posted on how the children’s education is going.

The Rubel family is from the Nowga District in Northwest Bangladesh. Rubel and his wife have two daughters who are five and two years old, respectively. Because the family lives in a remote area, Rubel could not find any work, and the family did not have any land to cultivate. Furthermore, his wife has been sick for a while and could not afford to see a doctor. Sometimes, the family eats only once a day. CTFund decided to buy a rickshaw van for this family so that Rubel can provide food and medical treatment for his family, as well as send his oldest daughter to school.

The Liton family lives in Sirajgong, Bangladesh. Jalhaq, the father, and Ranu, the mother, have two children. Their daugther, Kanon, is seven years old. Their son, Shohag, is four years old. Jalhaq used to borrow a rickshaw from a busness to drive around the district and pay half of his income to the business. As a result, his son and daughter had to work at other people's houses in order to help provide for the family. Now, after getting his own rickshaw from CTFund, he will be able to provide for his family and send his children to school. CTFund will provide updates about how the children's education is going, as well as general updates about the family.
